What the Buddha Taught and How it is Still Relevant in Today’s Troubled World

With Barry Gillespie

May 31 - June 5, 2022
Rocky Mountain Ecodharma Retreat Center
We are in the midst of a deep ecological/social/political crisis. The Buddha practiced and taught over 2500 years ago. What is the relevance of his teachings today? How can they help us deal with our reactions to the world's plight? How can they inform our efforts to create positive change in the world? We will consider these questions in the context of a traditional Theravada Mindfulness retreat in silence, with seated meditation. walking meditation, daily meditation instruction and dhamma talks, and individual practice meetings/instructions for all yogis. All of the walking practice will be out of doors (weather permitting) so that student may practice in RMERC's beautiful natural world. In addition there will be time every day for students to optionally hike by themselves on the land and an optional 40 minute gentle yoga class every day.

With Jon Aaron and Gulwinder “Gullu” Singh

July 12 - 17, 2022
Book now and get 10% off listed prices. Offer valid until May 14, 2022.
Held in noble silence, in this retreat we will bring loving curiosity to the direct experience of the external/internal relationship to sounds, sites, smells, textures and tastes of the natural world. Meditation halls have their benefits, but what if we turned a mountainside, a prairie, or riverbank into our meditation hall? Most of this retreat will be held outdoors. We will practice opening the senses to what’s right in front of us and all around us, developing tranquility and insight through an exploration of our own nature and our place in the nature of things.

This training retreat is not about learning a set, prescribed method, and a lot of the program is experimental and flexible. Both individually and collectively, we will respond appropriately to the situation at the time we gather. Our goal is to support and catalyze deep personal learning that you can apply to your own dharma practice and leadership, in order to develop ecodharma in your own way. The uniqueness and authenticity of our own experience shapes how each of us understands dharma, and this training will reflect that in everything we do. Our hope is that this experience informs, motivates, and empowers you to bring ecodharma into your own dharma and your own life.

Inner Outer Nature Part I: Ecodharma Training Retreat (for Experienced Practitioners and Dharma Leaders)

With Johann Robbins, David Loy, Lin Wang Gordon and Cornelia Santschi

July 21 - 30, 2022
Book now and get 10% off listed prices. Offer valid until May 14, 2022.
This training and nature retreat is a ten-day experiential immersion into ecodharma, specifically for dedicated practitioners, dharma leaders and teachers. Our sense of separation from nature is at the root of the ecological crises our civilization faces, and ecodharma is a path of deconstructing that separation, thus reuniting our inner nature with outer nature. Ecodharma practice is about healing our relationship with the rest of the natural world, so that an appropriate and authentic response to suffering can arise, which unifies our personal and spiritual transformation with social engagement. In this time of pandemic, and ecological and social crisis, the earth calls upon us to do what we can in response.

Inner Outer Nature – Part 2: Nature Retreat (Open to All)

With Johann Robbins, David Loy, Cornelia Santschi and Rochelle Calvert

July 31 - August 7, 2022
Book now and get 10% off listed prices. Offer valid until May 14, 2022.
The overall intention is for deep silence, practice, and the joy and healing that comes with a profound connection with nature, and then integrating that into one’s life. Spiritual practice will be supported by instruction in a variety of nature meditation practices. There will be nightly dharma talks, exploring how being-in-nature can be an important part of our spiritual path by helping to ground us in personal experience of non-separation from the natural world. The emphasis is not on meditative technique so much as developing direct awareness that can lead to a new integration of the internal (spiritual) and external (activity). There are no prerequisites for this retreat, and beginning meditators or first time retreaters are welcome and will be fully supported.

Gratitude, Grief and Grace in the Face of Global Suffering: A Women’s Retreat

With Jean Leonard and Sarah Heffron

August 16 - 20, 2022
Within the beauty of this mountain refuge and the teachings of the Dharma, we will co-create a safe and nourishing community of women in which to deepen our connection with ourselves, the Earth, and the more-than-human world. We will take an embodied pause to drink in the majesty of the natural world of which we are a part.  In both meditation and ritual space, we will open and lean in to the losses and suffering of this moment in order to discover boundless space and compassion to hold it all.  We will emphasize equality, acceptance, and belonging as we learn from and support one another.   Drawing from our innate wisdom and imagination, we will shape new stories of resilience, finding our unique contribution to the great paradigm shift toward a world in balance. This retreat welcomes all who self-identify as women and is appropriate for both those relatively new to practice, as well as more seasoned practitioners who wish to deepen and strengthen their connection to the Dharma in nature.

Metta: The Practice of Loving Kindness

With Barry Gillespie

October 18 - 23, 2022
The Metta Sutta is the Buddha's teaching on Loving Kindness Meditation. Metta is the practice of literally filling the mind with wholesome thoughts, leaving no room for unwholesome thoughts, emotions and moods. This practice also takes great concentration, making it both heart opening and mind expanding. During the six days of this retreat we will look in detail at these teachings and how they can be directly put into practice, using a traditional Theravada Buddhist form.
