Executive Director (ED) Job Description

Job Summary

  • Develop, oversee, and implement the strategic vision of the Rocky Mountain Ecodharma Retreat Center (RMERC)
  • Manage and oversee the organization, staff and operations in wise relationship to both people and the land and liaise with the board and its Executive Committee related to strategic direction and policy
  • Primary areas of focus are creating a safe inclusive retreat culture, retreat operations, finance, membership programs, fundraising, facilities, event and logistics planning
  • Develop relationships with local community organizations including those with a focus on Black, Indigenous and people of color, veterans, disabled, gender and sexual identity and economically disenfranchised populations
  • Candidate will live within an hour drive of retreat center in Ward, CO or be willing to relocate to the area
  • Part-time 15-20 hrs/week (seasonally varying range of effort)
  • Pay rate of $45-55/hour

Roles and Responsibilities

Oversight and Management

  • Attend to community and membership inquiries, and build and maintain good relationships with with other organizations including those with a focus on Black, Indigenous and people of color, veterans, disabled, gender and sexual identity and economically disenfranchised populations
  • Develop, implement, and manage member programs including – fundraising events, communications, marketing and engagement, and volunteer campaigns
  • Supervise Program Manager, Program Administrator, Retreat Center Manager, and any potential future staff
  • Serve as the single point of contact for vendors and contractors who work on/at the lodge including the Retreat Cook
  • Collaborate with the Executive Committee and Board of Director for strategic guidance, retreat center operational updates, policy development and organizational initiatives
  • Assist Treasurer in development of the annual budget including setting individual budgets for strategic RMERC-sponsored retreats
  • Track and update large projected cost for facilities, manage bank account, liaise with RMERC Bookkeeper as necessary
  • Make bank deposits, process payroll, pay vendors, schedule maintenance, and manage emergency issues
  • Ensure all required payments related to maintenance of the center (e.g., for insurance) are made in a timely manner

Retreat Program Oversight

  • Oversee and refine the annual retreat listing process and schedule in collaboration with the Program Committee
  • Work with the Program Manager to finalize the retreat application process and have retreats posted in a timely manner (currently no later than January 1st)
  • Develop and implement marketing plan for the retreat schedule release
  • Manage tracking and revisions of RMERC policies
  • Be a potential reporting source for conflicts (e.g., among retreatants, between retreatants and teachers), and involved in processes of resolution and reconciliation

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have the capacity to use a variety of people and project management skills and work with people with different working styles
  • 5-8 years relevant management and leadership experience (non-profit organization, hospitality, operating a business, retreat center)
  • Demonstrated tactics of membership or community building and engagement (i.e. environmental or social justice groups)
  • Experience managing organizational budgets
  • Demonstrated organizational and process improvement experience
  • Excellent communication skills i.e. – listening, influencing, negotiating and written skills
  • Proficient in Google technology, forms, drive, calendaring functions
  • ED will be required to live within an hour drive of the retreat center, which is located in Ward, CO, or to relocate to the area

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience managing a nonprofit including familiarity with compliance issues
  • Commitment to the stewardship of the land
  • Demonstrated dedication to spiritual practice, with an emphasis on environmentally conscious, nature-based principles
  • Experience in meditation retreat settings
  • Good sense of humor, situational flexibility, ability to respond to emerging situations quickly
